Marika Maijala: Artist Talk & Demo with Gary Lichtenstein Editions

Preceding her appearance at the 2023 Brooklyn Book Festival, Marika Maijala joins us for an artist talk, book launch for Rosie Runs (Elsewhere Editions, 2023) & hands-on silkscreen “pull” with Gary Lichtenstein Editions.

Marika Maijala is a Finnish illustrator, writer, visual artist, graphic designer, and animator. Recently featured in The New York Times about the unique artist community she has found on Harraka Island in Finland, Maijala’s body of work includes picture books, art books, paintings, drawings, texts, animations, videos, installations, and illustrations for public spaces. She received the Rudolf Koivu award for the best children’s book illustration in 2009 and 2019, and the Finnish State Award for Illustration Art in 2020. Her debut book as an author, Rosie Runs, was a nominee for The Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize in 2019 and was recently translated into English. Our event with Marika Maijala will culminate in a hands-on demo and studio tour with Gary Lichtenstein Editions who are newly housed in Building 13 on MASS MoCA’s 16-acre campus. Gary Lichtenstein is an artist, publisher and master printer of fine art silkscreen editions and multiples. Over the course of his remarkable 49-year career, Lichtenstein has produced ground-breaking work with artists including Cey Adams, Charlie Ahearn, Roz Chast, Michael De Feo, Al Diaz, Chris “DAZE” Ellis, Ron English, Mako Fujimura, Bob Gruen, Richard Meier, Rebecca Miller, Dave Navarro, John Newsom, Eric Orr, Yigal Ozeri, Gary Panter, Shelter Serra, Duane Slick, Jessica Stockholder, and Nola Zirin. He has printed for industry legends including Marina Abramovic, Karl Benjamin, Robert Cottingham, FUTURA, Robert Indiana and Ken Price. Lichtenstein and Maijaila will collaborate on a silkscreen edition which will be available for purchase in the R & D Store.
